One other small note (I'd try to edit in the text but that didn't go so well last time) Third bullet point under "specific educational leadership duties" the reference to "artistic staff" should probably be "artistic faculty."

My initial response to comment 1 was that it is difficult to delineate artistic and academic curricula in a performing arts program, but in comment 2 Sue spells that out beautifully. I like the vision of that managerial partnership in helping us to provide for both dimensions of the students' education. It's an excellent concept and I'd like to see that depicted in this section of the charter.

[Comment 1] It is not my understanding that either one or the other of these individuals holds a senior managerial position over the other. I believe there should be a clear delineation between the Principal directing the academic curriculum and the Artistic Director directing the artistic curriculum.

[Comment 2] I believe that the Principal and Artistic Director are like two branches of the same administration. They will have different perspectives, goals, and responsibilities which may often clash. For instance, "Our singers need at least one advanced music lab...do they really need that extra year of language?"

The Principal should specify the academic curricula that each student must complete to fulfill Utah's requirements for secondary graduation and to prepare the students for a successful academic college career.

The Artistic Director must design the arts curricula with his department heads to assure graduation of students with well rounded artistic development that reflects the artistic vision of the school and which will fully prepare the students for collegiate study in the arts.

Once the respective curricula are designed these individuals will need to work together as a team to implement their needs; I assume this will require some negotiation.

To define the two as co-managers of the arts curricula could lead to future problems as we are not requiring our principal to have a background in the arts. The Principal will need to defer to the Artistic Director in matters affecting the direction of the arts program and the Artistic Director will need to defer to the Principal on all academic matters.

[Comment 3] Either specify exactly what experiences are equivalent to a Master's Degree or require only the degree. I would think that to maintain the high quality of artistic excellence we would like to see from the school some minimum combination of undergraduate work/post graduate work in education would be necessary and that we should absolutely require post graduate work in fine arts or some set base level of professional experience in the arts.

[Comment 4] Again, how MUCH teaching experience are we looking for?

[Comment 5] What volunteers? Community...arts professionals...parents? We need to be clear here on what is meant.
